Council and democracy

Whilst providing local government services for the 'Square Mile', the City of London also works to maintain and enhance the status of the business City as the world's leading international financial and business centre. It also provides the famous Barbican Centre, owns and manages open spaces such as Hampstead Heath and is Port Authority for most of the tidal Thames. Education and learning

The Education Service promotes learning, development and employability according to the strategic priorities of the Education Committee. Distinct from its Local Education Authority role, the City of London runs three independent schools - City of London School, City of London School for Girls and City of London Freemen's School, all of which regularly deliver excellent results. It has contributed funds to the City Academy and runs the internationally-renowned Guildhall School of Music and Drama.

Environment and planning

The City of London seeks to foster the continued development of the Square Mile as a leading international financial and business centre, whilst at the same time improving living, working and travelling conditions and protecting its historic buildings. It works to ensure that its residents and businesses enjoy an environment which is safe and, as far as possible, free from risks to health and welfare. The City of London also owns and manages over 10,000 acres of open spaces in and around London for the recreation and enjoyment of the public and as breathing spaces from built-up developments.

Jobs and careers
The City of London employs approximately 3,500 people in a wide variety of jobs. They are based not only within the Square Mile, but at many other locations such as Epping Forest in Essex, Ashtead in Surrey, Heathrow Airport and Sheerness on the Thames estuary.
