Port Health Authority


One of the Port Health Authority's river launches in action The London Port Health Authority, is part of the City of London Corporation, the local authority for the Square Mile, the City business sector of London. The Authority is responsible for a district which extends for 150 kilometres (94 miles) along the tidal Thames from Teddington to the outer Estuary and includes the Ports of Tilbury, Thamesport, Sheerness and London City Airport.

The Authority, the largest in the UK, has been in existence since 1872 and is part of the City of London's Department of Environmental Services.

ISO 9001 mark The Authority is registered against ISO 9001 for its imported food enforcement service at the Ports of Tilbury, Thamesport and Sheerness and the food hygiene service on the river.

Methyl Bromide

With effect from 19 March the use of methyl bromide as a fumigant for quarantine or pre-shipment purposes is no longer permtted within the EU. LPHA will no longer issue authorisations for its use. Alternative treatments must be used such as heat treatment or phosphine and exporters are advised to check import requirements with the relevant authority in the country of destination.

Chinese Mitten Crabs

Details of a recent symposium held by the Linnean Society about these crabs and the possibility of commercial harvesting as a way of controlling their population can be found on our shellfish page.

Swine Flu

Due to the current concern over the potential spread of swine influenza, we wish to remind masters of vessels, and their agents, to report any symptoms of infectious disease in crew or passengers aboard their vessels to London Port Health Authority.
